Netflix Commits to California Despite Tax Incentives Elsewhere
Neflix is chillin’ in California. While many studios are chasing tax incentives outside of California, Netflix, who recently expanded its footprint in Hollywood, is committed to producing in the “city of stars.”
The video-streaming service has a $6 billion production budget, and figures it’s more important to prioritize creativity over tax incentives. “Chasing tax credits…puts the onus on the cast and crew…[and you] put a $100 million production budget at risk by having a lot of miserable people around,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer.
While many other content creators are filming in the UK, Canada, Louisiana, Georgia, and New York, Netflix is keeping its eyes and lens in its California backyard, which means that the infrastructure, businesses and real estate in the state will reap the benefits.
