Nation’s Eyes on California as State Wrestles with Affordable Housing

The NY Times has put a spotlight on California’s affordable housing and homelessness struggle, with recent coverage of an Oakland homeless encampment. Whatever your political and personal views on issues related to homelessness and public vs. private affordable housing solutions, Oakland is perhaps the last “city by the bay” that has a ready pallet to attract investments from commercial real estate and urban planning leaders.

Oakland offers approachable land and assets costs, public transit options, an efficient airport and even a port. This, from a community adjacent to San Francisco and other Bay Area tech clusters demanding services and support from working class and blue collar professionals.

However, as the NYT highlights, the struggle is real. As Connect Media has reported, the commercial real estate community is bringing its immense talent and best and brightest to look for a one nation solution, balancing the need for economic prosperity and investment returns with urban realities.
