Modell’s Sporting Goods to Close All Stores, Including Seven in D.C.

Modell’s Sporting Goods, which operates 153 stores between New York, Philadelphia and the D.C. metro areas, has announced plans to close all stores after filing for bankruptcy. The retailer opened its first store in 1889.

Consumers’ growing preference for shopping online, as well as high retail rents in the areas where Modell’s operates, were cited as contributing factors for the store closures. More than 9,000 stores closed across the country in 2019. Further, mall owners are wary of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic will have on malls and retailers that are already on shaky ground financially.

Modell’s has seven locations in the D.C. metro, including suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia that will close. Locations include stores in Columbia Heights at the D.C. USA shopping center, on the H Street Corridor at the Hechinger Mall, in Pentagon City at Kimco’s Pentagon Centre, in Bethesda at 7201 Wisconsin Ave. NW, in Greenbelt at the Greenway Center, in Capitol Heights at the Ritchie Station Marketplace, and in Germantown at the Milestone Center development.
