Miramar Hotel Redevelopment Plan Approved by Santa Monica
The Santa Monica City Council approved plans for redeveloping the Miramar Hotel into a “new jewel” in downtown Santa Monica. The 4-2 vote allows Athens Group to expand the oceanfront site at 1133 Ocean Ave. and follows nearly a decade of community engagement and planning for the 4.5-acre landmarked property.
The 502,157-square-foot mixed-use hotel, retail and residential project will include two new buildings, including a 10-story, 130-foot-tall structure, 312 hotel rooms, 60 condominiums, and 18,000 square feet of commercial space above a 428-car garage. Key components of the design plan are the historic Palisades Building and the iconic Moreton Bay Fig Tree, which will be the focal point of a 14,000-square-foot garden.
An affiliate of MSD Partners, L.P., the family office of Michael and Susan Dell, acquired the property in 2006 and engaged the Athens Group to guide the hotel’s redevelopment. The California Coastal Commission now must approve the project, which anticipates reopening in 2026.
