Minimum Wage Hike Pushes Wendy’s to Automation

By: Daniella Soloway

Responding to the $15 minimum wage hike campaign, Wendy’s has announced that the chain plans to add self-service kiosks in more than 6,000 locations across the nation.

Wendy’s President Todd Penegor noted that while the decision to utilize the technology will be left up to each franchise, some have already upped the menu prices to offset the wage increase. Wendy’s also plans to cut company-owned stores down to 5% of its total locations, to keep earnings in line. In addition to the kiosks, Wendy’s is gearing up to enact mobile ordering and payment systems by the end of the year.

Other fast food chains, like McDonald’s, are also considering automation to replace low-level employees.
