Microsoft’s Growing Cloud Takes on Competitors
Microsoft’s cloud-database services are expanding, threatening to weaken competitors’ hold in the web-based space.
Two new services are set to debut under the company’s Azure business: Azure Cosmos DB, which would allow the start and stop of applications when located anywhere in the world; and a database migration functionality that would allow customers to move data centers into Azure.
The latter, analysts say, jeopardizes Oracle’s dominance in the customer-operated data center arena. Cloud databases are increasingly attractive to customers seeking new technology, and to cloud providers naturally capturing information relating to consumer behaviors.
