Microsoft Buys Data Center for $80M

Microsoft Corp. acquired a 202,000-square-foot data center on San Antonio’s west side, paying seller California-based Chevron $80 million. The 34-acre buy at 5200 Rogers Rd. is the fourth that the tech giant either owns, or is building in San Antonio, all of which are on the west side.

In December 2015, Microsoft acquired 158 acres in Texas Research Park, approximately five miles west of Loop 1604, also in San Antonio. Construction is underway on a $1 billion, 1-million-square-foot data center that is expected to be completed in 2020. Meanwhile, Microsoft also operates a 427,000-square-foot facility in Westover Hills, which was completed in 2005.

According to developer Marty Wender, who helped build the Westover Hills facility, the west side area is desirable because of numerous substations CPS Energy has in the area. This makes energy plentiful and cheap, which is perfect for data centers, Wender told the San Antonio Business Express.
