Melrose Park’s Westlake Hospital Gets Reprieve on Closure

Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park, IL must remain open until a state board can review owner Pipeline Health’s application to close it, a Cook County Circuit Court judge ruled Tuesday. Pipeline, which acquired Westlake and two other Chicago-area hospitals in January, had planned to close the facility immediately, saying that declining staff levels were compromising patient care and safety.

Judge Eve Reilly granted Melrose Park a temporary restraining order that prevents Los Angeles-based Pipeline from further cuts in the hospital’s services or staff until the state Health Facilities and Services Review Board has considered the application. The board is scheduled to review Pipeline’s application on April 30.

Pipeline bought Westlake, Louis A. Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago and West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, IL for $70 million this past January. It initially said it would keep all three facilities open, then announced it would close Westlake by July.
