Medical School Coming to University of Houston

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed Texas House Bill 826, which will formally add a medical school to the University of Houston, which will be housed in the UH System’s flagship campus in Houston, situated just south of the CBD.

The legislation brings the medical school total in Texas to 13. The bill unanimously cleared the Texas Senate, while passing the Texas House by a wide margin.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board signed off on creating a UH medical school in October 2018, as well as creating a medical school at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Denton, TX. The new medical schools are being created to address a shortage of physicians.

Pending accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the UH medical school plans to admit its first class of students in fall 2020.
