Mayor: “One City with Two Waterways”
Sounding the theme that “Chicago is one city with two waterways”—Lake Michigan and the Chicago River—Mayor Rahm Emanuel outlined the second phase of the city’s Building on Burnham plan. Since the plan’s introduction in 2016, 5.5 miles of waterfront access have been developed, and 985 acres of parks have been acquired. Among other initiatives, the mayor plans to increase that acreage to 2,020.
“By preserving, protecting and improving our natural areas, we are building on the blueprint of Daniel Burnham’s Plan for Chicago,” Emanuel said. The idea is to take off from several projects that have already been completed through Building on Burnham, including the Riverwalk, the North Branch Framework Plan and the Chicago Urban River Edges Ideas Lab.
Accordingly, the city is engaging select architectural firms with experience in designing award-winning riverfronts, parks and public spaces to update the river design guidelines for use by developers.
