Mayor, Governor Talk Research Campus in Rare Joint Appearance
Mayor Rahm Emanuel (at right) and Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner made a rare joint public appearance to disclose construction plans for a University of Illinois satellite campus that would serve as a research institute. To be known as the Discovery Partners Institute, the project has received a state appropriation of up to $500 million through the Build Illinois program to finance construction.
“With state secured funding, all systems are ‘go,’ ” said Rauner, who has advocated the project for more than a decade. “The state’s initial investment will be matched several times over by private sources of capital.”
The university will put up $6 million of its own money to help fund startup efforts, and has opened a DPI office that will be expanded to 20,000 square feet. Tel Aviv University has signed on as DPI’s first international academic partner, and OSF HealthCare will be the first corporate partner.
