Mayor Walsh: Boston Needs Middle-Class Housing

Boston Mayor Martin Walsh called on the business community to pitch in on addressing the region’s shortage of middle-class housing. The appeal Walsh made, as part of his annual address to the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, covered both development of middle-income product and lobbying to streamline the approvals process.

“We’ve built luxury apartments, condos, and townhouses,” Walsh told the Chamber audience. “That fills a need and it takes pressure off our older housing stock. We’re also building and preserving record amounts of low-income housing.

“But what’s missing is the middle,” he continued. “Our workforce needs middle-class housing. And we stand ready to partner with anyone who will step forward to help address this need.”

Along with development, Walsh requested support of the Governor’s Choice Housing Bill, which changes local approvals from a two-thirds vote to “a simple, democratic majority. It’s a simple fix, with positive results for your workforce.”
