Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson Dies After Cancer Battle
Marriott International president and CEO Arne Sorenson unexpectedly passed away on Monday, the Bethesda, MD-based lodging company announced. He was 62.
Sorenson was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2019 and earlier this month temporarily cut back his schedule to accommodate “more demanding treatment” for the disease, said Marriot.
CEO of Marriott since 2012, Sorenson spearheaded the company’s $13-billion acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts. Along with driving growth for franchisees and operators, Sorenson also steered the company’s progress on diversity, equity and inclusion, environmental sustainability and human trafficking awareness.
“Arne was an exceptional executive – but more than that, he was an exceptional human being,” said executive chairman J.W. Marriott, Jr.
Earlier this month, veteran Marriott executives Stephanie Linnartz and Tony Capuano assumed responsibility for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the company’s business units and corporate functions. They’ll continue doing so until a new Marriott CEO is named.
