Manhattan’s Lower East Side Gets First Target

Target is expanding in New York with a 22,500-square-foot store in Delancey Street Associates’ Essex Crossing. The store will be Target’s first on Manhattan’s Lower East Side in an underserved market at 145 Clinton St.

The 1.9-million-square-foot Essex Crossing development is under construction and planned for 1,078 residential units, a movie theater, bowling alley, three-block-long marketplace and medical facility. Most retailers at the project are expected to open in 2018.

The store, located on the tower’s second floor, will be one of Target’s urban concepts, which feature smaller footprints, typically in the 12,000 to 60,000-square-foot range. The retailer plans at least five urban stores in Manhattan over the next three years. By the end of 2019, Target expects to open 130 nationwide.
