Logistics Industry Job Growth Continues
Logistics and related companies increased hiring in April. The growth, noted in a robust national government jobs report released last week, is tied to ecommerce, and was spread across fulfillment and distribution centers, as well as delivery companies.
Overall, U.S. nonfarm payrolls rose by 211,000 jobs in April, and unemployment dropped to 4.4%, the lowest rate since May 2007, which may prime the economy for strong 2Q 2017 expansion.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said the warehouse and storage sector added 2,500 jobs, accelerating from just 300 jobs in March. Parcel carriers and delivery firms contributed another 3,200 jobs in April.
Trucking companies cut payrolls by 100, and railroads eliminated 500 jobs. Goods-producing industries accounted for roughly 10% of the new jobs in April, while factory hiring slowed.
