Local Grocery Chain Treasure Island Shutting Down After 55 Years
Family-owned grocery chain Treasure Island Foods, with locations on the city’s South and North Sides as well as in suburban Wilmette, IL, will close its doors Oct. 12 after 55 years. The news was first reported by the student newspaper of the University of Chicago, which owns the land on which Treasure Island’s Hyde Park store (pictured) is located.
“We have done everything we could to attempt to get the company on solid ground to try to operate for another 55 years,” CEO Maria Kamberos told store employees in a note, which was shared on social media. “Unfortunately, given the current industry conditions, it has been impossible for us to continue to operate without losing money.”
In addition to the Hyde Park and Wilmette locations, Treasure Island will be closing stores in Streeterville, Lakeview, Gold Coast and Old Town. A Lincoln Park store went out of business in September.
