Lawmakers Ready to Act on Congestion Pricing for Manhattan

Congestion pricing for Manhattan, first proposed decades ago, may finally become reality. State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie told reporters that the pricing plan to help fund the city’s aging transit network is moving ahead.

“Safe to say the Assembly is ready to go forward on congestion pricing,” Heastie said after meeting with fellow lawmakers.

Details about how much drivers into Midtown and Lower Manhattan will be charged and how funds will be spent still need to be determined, Heastie said.

However, published reports said the announcement was the clearest indication yet that Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s plan to fund the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will be included in the state budget due for passage by April 1.

On the Brian Lehrer radio show Tuesday, Cuomo said, “We’ve been bleeding the MTA for decades and we now finally have the body politic ready to pay more, and we have to attack congestion.”
