Lawmakers Enact State Budget with Funds for South Loop Innovation Campus
Illinois’ state legislature has passed a budget on time for the first time since Gov. Bruce Rauner took office. Among the revenue assumptions the budget makes is that the long-stalled sale of the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago’s Loop will finally come to pass during the 2019 fiscal year.
The measure earmarks $500 million for the establishment of an innovation center on the University of Illinois’ South Loop campus. Rauner has pushed for the project.
State lawmakers also okayed $2.2 billion toward an $11.4-billion infrastructure program. “Investing in transportation creates jobs and economic opportunity, improves safety and makes Illinois a better place to raise a family,” Rauner said in a statement. “This plan will make Illinois more competitive while protecting the interests of the taxpayers.”
