Large-Scale Residential Development Targeted
Labor unions and housing activists have submitted a new ballot proposal that would force developers to provide affordable housing on the large-scale residential projects that exceed planning rules in Los Angeles.
The measure gives developers options to either meet affordable housing requirements by building such residences, or paying fees to the city. If it makes the ballot in November, and passes, the proposal would also steer a percentage of construction jobs at key projects to local or disadvantaged residents.
The new and potentially costly requirements would be placed on developments seeking such variances as height or density. Opponents call the measure a “wolf in sheep’s clothing”, because it may give developers new incentives to “super-size their projects.”
