L.A. County Poised to Extend Temporary Rent Cap

This week, Los Angeles County supervisors will consider extending a temporary rent cap that was approved last year. The new motion, introduced by Supervisors Sheila Kuehl and Hilda Solis, establishes the groundwork to pursue a permanent rent control measure.

Supervisors also will consider expanding the “just cause” eviction provision to cover all properties, not just rentals built after 1995.

The County wants to establish a Rent Review Board to oversee current and future ordinances adopted by the Board concerning rent stabilization, mobile home space rent regulation, tenant protections and related matters. That group would be charged with assessing the conditions of the county’s rental housing stock and coming up with a plan for the development of a countywide code enforcement program to monitor and improve rental housing conditions.

* Story update 4/9: The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to extend, and expand temporary rent control measures in unincorporated Los Angeles through the end of the year.
