Kilroy Seeks to be First Major Landlord to Achieve Carbon Neutral Operations

Kilroy Realty Corporation (KRC) committed to achieving carbon neutral operations by year end 2020. The Los Angeles-based commercial owner says it would be the only major real estate company to make the pledge, which was announced at the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco. The REIT’s portfolio includes 13.9 million square feet.

Kilroy’s John Kilroy says “KRC has a longstanding commitment to sustainability because it is the right thing to do. Our sustainability programs have been and will continue to be positive for our bottom line, promoting tenant and employee satisfaction, reducing operating costs, and making our buildings more resilient to whatever may lie ahead.”

Achieving carbon neutral operations will involve three steps. 1) reducing the energy consumption via onsite energy reductions. 2) onsite solar and battery installation opportunities. 3) an offsite energy power purchase agreement. Kilroy says it is committed to achieving the same objective for its entire development pipeline.
