Kilgore Eyeing Cultural Arts Designation

The city of Kilgore, TX, in East Texas, is considering applying for the state’s cultural district designation from the Texas Commission on the Arts. Cultural districts are defined as special zones that can use cultural resources to help boost economic development and community revitalization.

Kilgore has an active cultural area, which includes Kilgore College’s theater department, as well as the Texas Shakespeare Festival, Commerce Street, Van Cliburn Auditorium and the East Texas Oil Museum. The programming would have an impact on tourism, by focusing on a specific part of the community that is, ideally, walkable.

The designation could help the city determine ways to link all the cultural entities, as well as help boost tourism and marketing efforts by coordinating events.
