Job Growth Tapers Off, Unemployment Remains Low

The Texas economy added 7,600 seasonally adjusted non-farm jobs in September 2019, which represented the lowest monthly gain in more than a year, according to data released by the Texas Workforce Commission. Unemployment, however, held steady at 3.4% for the fourth straight month, a continued record low since the state began tracking in the mid-1970s.

Texas employers added 300,000 jobs on an annual basis, with employment growth at 2.4%.

Professional and Business Service led September’s job growth, adding 9,600 jobs during the month, followed by Construction, which added 7,200 jobs and Education and Health Services, which increased by 1,800 jobs. These gains were offset by losses in Mining and Logging (-1,100), Trade, Transportation and Utilities (-7,400) and Leisure and Hospitality (-2,200).
