Jewel-Osco Opens Woodlawn’s First Grocery in 40 Years

The South Side’s Woodlawn neighborhood has gotten its first full-service grocery in more than 40 years with the opening of a Jewel-Osco. City officials held a ribbon-cutting recently at the $20-million, 48,000-square-foot supermarket.

The 11th new or repurposed grocery store on the South Side since Rahm Emanuel became mayor, the Woodlawn Jewel-Osco was developed by a partnership of Terraco and DL3. It’s part of the Woodlawn master plan devised by nonprofit Preservation of Affordable Housing (POAH).

Aaron Gornstein, president and CEO of POAH, said the Jewel-Osco represented “the latest development on the site of the former Section 8 Grove Parc project, and brings jobs and a full-service grocery to a community that will benefit from both.”

The store is the latest in a series of city-supported development in Woodlawn along Cottage Grove Avenue near 61st Street, not far from the future home of the Obama Presidential Center.
