It’s Official: Astrodome is a State Landmark
The Texas Historical Commission (THC) designated the Houston Astrodome as a state antiquities landmark. The action paves the way for the structure’s legal protection. The former sports stadium at 8400 Kirby Dr. was listed on the National Register of Historical Places in 2014.
The SAL designation means that Harris County, which owns the Astrodome, has to consult with the THC about any alterations to the structure through a permitting process. The THC then determines if work can move forward.
In September 2016, the Harris County Commissioners Court approved a $105 million plan that would raise the Astrodome’s floor to ground level, and provide more than 500,000 square feet of rentable space. The renovation plan will need to be approved by the THC.
