Is Light Rail Coming to Edinburg?

The $5 million Edinburg Transit Terminal, which is currently under construction, will have space for light rail, as well as being the connecting point for Valley Metro bus routes. The 15,000-square-foot terminal at 617 W. University Dr. is scheduled for completion by the end of 2018.

“The existing rail line is right next to the transit terminal. We left space in there so when (light rail) is ready, we are ready,” Valley Metro’s Tom Logan told the Rio Grande Guardian.

How close is Edinburg, and the Rio Grande Valley, to getting a light rail system? State representative Armando Martinez (Weslaco) is attempting to secure funding to purchase rights-of-way along freight rail lines linking Edinburg, McAllen, Mission and Brownsville. As of now, light rail is more a vision than reality, but local transit authority leaders have been praising Martinez’s efforts.
