Illinois Ranks Second to NJ for Outbound Migration
Although New Jersey is the state most likely to see residents move out, Illinois isn’t far behind. United Van Lines’ 42nd Annual Movers’ Survey tracing state-to-state migration patterns found that 65.9% of Illinois movers in 2019 were outbound—i.e. leaving the state rather than coming into it.
The percentage of outbound movers in Illinois is higher than California’s 54.4%, while the inbound percentage of 34.1% is less than half of top-ranked Vermont’s 72.9%. Key reasons for moving out of Illinois last year included retirement (22%), family (24.94%) and lifestyle (19.81%).
Conversely, most inbound movers to Illinois came for job-related reasons. United Van Lines’ survey found that employment was the key motivator for 62.49% of inbound movers, compared to 41.19% of outbound movers.
Accordingly, outbound movers from Illinois tend to skew older. Outbound movers age 55 and older outnumber inbound movers, while the reverse is true for those 54 and younger.
