Illinois Lawmakers Enact $45B Infrastructure Package
As part of an ambitious legislative push that included expanded gambling and sports betting in Illinois, the Illinois General Assembly has enacted a $45-billion, multiyear transportation and building improvements package. It’s the state’s first major public works program in a decade.
Calling the infrastructure program “transformative,” Gov. JB Pritzker credited the state House and Senate leadership with getting the package enacted. The Senate’s approval of this and several other measures capped a weekend that also saw state lawmakers legalize adult-use cannabis, and pass a balanced budget.
Projected revenues from the expanded gambling, including a casino to be operated in Chicago, represent one of the funding mechanisms for the public works program. Another will be a doubling of the state’s motor fuels tax, last raised in 1990.
For building construction projects, the infrastructure legislation imposes a tax of $6 daily and 9% monthly on garage and lot parking.
