Hyde Park Set for Its First Boutique Hotel
The South Side’s Hyde Park neighborhood will see its first luxury hotel when the Sophy, a 98-key boutique property, opens its doors on Oct. 1. It has been jointly developed by Portland, ME-based Olympia Cos. and Smart Hotels, developer of a group of properties designed to serve visitors to college campuses.
Hyde Park is home to the University of Chicago. A spokeswoman for the Sophy told Chicago Business Journal that visitors to the university are indeed a target market for the new boutique hotel, but other visitors to the South Side are on the developers’ radar as well.
The Sophy joins a marketplace with limited hotel options in terms of catering to Hyde Park and the surrounding neighborhoods in Chicago. It will feature the Mesler Kitchen & Bar, under the direction of executive chef Bradford Shovlin, a veteran of Michelin-starred restaurants downtown.
