Hutto: Wanting Commercial for a Tax-Base Boost

Hutto, TX is a residential community approximately 30 miles northeast of downtown Austin. But if the city council has its way, it will be bringing in more commercial and business growth in an effort to reduce the tax burden on the homeowners.

The city has outlined seven goals to boost business activity, which include developing downtown Hutto, providing speculative light industrial park space throughout the to-be-developed Innovation Business Park, and infrastructure investment among key growth corridors.

“A city that’s all residential, is not really sustainable,” said Odis Jones, who took over as Hutto’s city manager in early 2017. “It puts a lot of tax burden on residents. We need to be able to increase our tax base, so we can provide more of the things that are important to residents—public safety, good schools, roads and infrastructure—without raising taxes every year.”
