Hutto Working to Balance Rapid Growth

The city of Hutto, TX, is approximately 30 miles northeast of downtown Austin. And, much like its neighbor, Hutto is undergoing major growth. To prevent that growth from turning into growing pains, the Hutto City Council is turning to a new zoning option, called SmartCode. SmartCode is being used for Brooklands, a 168-acre residential and commercial development at CR 137 and FM 1660 South.

SmartCode requires high-density residential, along with commercial development and parks. As such, Brooklands is dedicating 16 acres to commercial property, and 14 acres to pocket parks and open space. Developers will review a preliminary plan with the Hutto Planning and Zoning Commission on Dec. 6.
