Hunts Point Readies for $300M Mixed Use
The architects behind The Peninsula, the $300-million redevelopment of the old Spofford Juvenile Detention Center in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx, will create “a hub that ties together a mix of activities — commercial, manufacturing and residential — around a central plaza, fostering interaction between residents, visitors, and the Hunts Point community,” said Claire Weisz, principal at WXY architecture + urban design. The firm was selected, with Body Lawson Associates, to design the redevelopment at 1221 Spofford Ave.
Gilbane Development Company, Hudson Companies and Mutual Housing Association of New York will create 750 apartments and additional commercial space surrounding a central green space. The project is expected to create 177 permanent jobs and more than 1,600 temporary construction jobs. The first phase is scheduled to open in 2021.
