Hotel Opens in Former Gillespie Ford Building

Tru by Hilton, a midscale hotel brand, has opened at 901 E. Houston St. in downtown San Antonio.  The 25,000-square-foot property was once home to Gillespie Ford and, in redeveloping the asset, Baywood Hotels kept the original pie-shaped framework of the dealership. “The San Antonio property is an example of how we are strategically pursuing adaptive reuse projects to open in higher barrier-to-entry markets,” said Alexandra Jaritz, global head, Tru by Hilton.

The 95-key, two-story hotel has restored stucco work on the exterior and a unique lobby area that is larger than most existing Tru properties. The San Antonio hotel is the second Tru by Hilton branded property in Texas.

The building itself delivered in the 1930s, and was home to Gillespie Ford, as well as Cavender Cadillac, which shuttered the location in 2013.
