Historic Hangar 9 Reopens at Brooks City Base

Brooks City Base in southern San Antonio celebrated the grand opening of the restored Hangar 9 at 8081 Inner Circle Rd. The $2.8 million restoration project transformed an historic wooden airplane hangar into an event space.

The 8,700-square-foot Hangar 9 is close to a century old, and is the oldest wooden aircraft hangar of its kind still standing in its original location. Many hangars of the type were built as temporary facilities during the U.S.’ involvement in World War I. The hangars were designed by industrial architect Albert Kahn, and could hold up to eight Curtiss NJ-4 “Jenny” aircraft to be housed in one spot.

Hangar 9 is a San Antonio Historic Landmark, a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, and is listed in the Texas State Historical Survey and National Register of Historic Places. The hangar’s restoration took approximately one year.
