Heron Tower Renovated to Earn LEED Gold

Takenaka has renovated Heron Tower to be so efficient, the 27-story office building has earned a LEED Gold certification. That’s a difficult accomplishment for a tower built in 1987.

“Takenaka’s target at Heron Tower was LEED Silver, and we are beyond pleased to have exceeded the expectation,” stated Joseph McCausland, a property manager with Cushman & Wakefield’s Asset Services, who with Tai Jance, chief engineer, manages the building for Takenaka.

Over a two-year period, building management cut its water bill with new plumbing fixtures, and replaced and upgraded hundreds of the interior and perimeter air conditioning units. A new building management system also allows managers to schedule those AC units to use less electricity at night, when the offices are mostly empty.

The 154,023 square foot boutique office building is located in the Plaza District at 70 E. 55th St.
