Group Sues to Block Obama Center Construction
Nonprofit group Protect Our Parks Inc. has filed suit in U.S. District Court in a bid to prevent the Obama Presidential Center from being built in Jackson Park. The suit alleges that the City of Chicago’s transfer of the long-term lease of lakefront land to a private, nongovernmental foundation represents an “institutional bait and switch” in violation of the public trust.
Further, the suit alleges that the city and the Chicago Park District don’t have the authority to transfer public parkland to a non-governmental entity such as the Obama Foundation. The Chicago Plan Commission is scheduled to consider the lease on Thursday.
In a statement, the Emanuel administration called the Obama Center “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to invest hundreds of millions of dollars that will create good jobs on the South Side, bring our communities together and honor the legacy of Chicago’s favorite son and daughter.”
