In the midst of the city of Austin trying to figure out how to pay for a much-needed convention center expansion, “A New Vision for Austin’s Convention Center,” is adding its voice to the necessity of more space. The group, a coalition consisting of Austinites from the music, arts, technology and business industries, have indicated that a larger convention center is essential for increasing both bookings and business.

Expansion talks have been ongoing for close to three years. During that time, the 247,050-square-foot Austin Convention Center lost business because of booking conflicts and lack of space. Lost business increased from 34% in 2013 to 50% in 2016.

If the Austin City Council approves the expansion, there is no set timeline for construction or completion. The expansion plan would include 120,800 square feet of meeting space, and 120,600 of ballroom space.
