Government Re-Opens After 69-Hour Shutdown

The first government shutdown in five years ended Monday evening when President Trump signed a temporary government spending bill. The three-day partial closure ended when Senate Democrats accepted a deal from Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that will fund the government through Feb. 8.

Still unresolved for at least another three weeks is the politically-charged immigration proposal. Republican leaders agreed to consider demands from Democrats to restore Congressional protections against deportation of young undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children.

The spending bill was passed by the Senate 81-18, and later the House voted 266-150 to approve the stopgap funding measure.

A federal children’s health insurance program was extended in the measure. Government workers who are furloughed will receive back pay for this shutdown and any other funding lapse in 2018.
