Google’s a $45B Cash Engine for New York

Outside of its home state of California, Google makes the greatest impact on the economy of New York. The digital giant said that it helped generate an estimated $45.5 billion of economic activity across the Empire State in 2017, for the businesses, website publishers and nonprofits that use its search engine and advertising tools.

That sum, exceeded only by the $67.4 billion that Google said it generates for California businesses, derives from about 121,000 New York State-based businesses that used Google tools last year. New York is also second only to California in the number of people it employs: 6,700, compared to over 36,000 in Silicon Valley and the other Golden State markets where Google has offices.

Google’s New York State presence includes the mammoth 111 Eighth Ave., which it acquired for its Manhattan offices in early 2011. Earlier this year, it paid $2.4 billion for Chelsea Market.
