Google Gears Up for Major NYC Expansion

Google is in advanced talks to lease or acquire St. John’s Terminal, the sprawling, 1.3-million-square-foot former warehouse that’s set to undergo redevelopment as state-of-the-art office space, the Wall Street Journal reported. The search-engine giant is gearing up for a major New York expansion that could add more than 12,000 jobs to its local workforce, with about 8,500 at St. John’s Terminal.

Redevelopment of St. John’s Terminal at 550 Washington St. in Manhattan’s Hudson Square is slated for completion in 2022. Citing people said to be familiar with the matter, the WSJ reported that Google is also planning a 300,000-square-foot expansion at Chelsea Market, which it acquired for $2.4 billion earlier this year.

Coupled with an announced 250,000 square feet at Pier 57, the Chelsea Market expansion would mean enough space for more than 3,500 employees. Google also owns 111 Eighth Ave., which it acquired for $1.8 billion in 2010.
