Google Employees Can Work Remotely Until Summer 2021
Mountain View, CA-based Google plans to allow its 200,000-strong workforce to remain at home until at least next July as a result of the continued uncertainty over the COVID-19 pandemic. The move to extend the policy into 2021 is the first by a major U.S. corporation and impacts both full-time and contract employees across Google’s parent Alphabet Inc.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the decision was made by Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai last week following a discussion with Google Leads, an internal group of top executives. It is also expected to put pressure on other technology firms to adjust their decisions to bring employees back to offices, some that were planned to occur as soon as January.
The decision was influenced by several factors including employees with families needing to balance uncertain school schedules and well as apartment lease decisions. The extension impacts employees at Google’s major offices including its Silicon Valley HQ, as well as others in the U.S., U.K., India and Brazil.
