GM Purchases Wind Power For 16 U.S. Facilities

General Motors has made its largest renewable energy procurement to date. Specifically, the auto manufacturer is purchasing enough wind power to equal the electricity needs of 16 of its U.S. facilities. The company will source its wind power with Renewable Energy Systems, and will purchase 50 megawatts of power produced at the 150mw Cactus Flats in Concho County, Texas.

The facilities will include business offices in Fort Worth and Austin, TX, a major assembly complex in Arlington, TX and 13 warehouses east of the Mississippi River. The contract will begin in the first half of 2018, meaning 6% of GM’s global energy use will be powered by renewable energy. Also beginning in 2018, GM will source more than 193,000mw of electricity from wind annually, which will be enough to power its Austin IT Innovation Center, a GM financial office in Fort Worth and 13 additional parts warehouses.
