GM Plans $300M Investment in U.S. Plant for Electric Cars

General Motors is investing $300 million in its Orion Township, MI assembly plant to produce a new Chevrolet electric vehicle (EV) domestically, rather than shipping the work overseas. The move will bring 400 new jobs to the Orion plant, part of a $1.8-billion investment in GM’s U.S. manufacturing operations.

GM said the decision to produce the new EV in Orion Township, rather than outside the U.S., stemmed partly from the fact that the new EV will be an advanced version of the Chevrolet Bolt that’s built at the Orion plant. Further, it will support the “rules of origin” provisions in the proposed United States, Mexico and Canada trade pact.

“This new Chevrolet electric vehicle is another positive step toward our commitment to an all-electric future,” said GM CEO Mary Barra. “GM will continue to invest in our U.S. operations where we see opportunities for growth.”
