George Lucas’ $700M Museum May Come to California
George Lucas is back scouting California sites for his $700-million science fiction museum. The creator of “Star Wars” cited “seemingly unending” legal challenges from opponents as his reason for pulling the plug on a plan to build the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Chicago.
The proposed waterfront site in the Windy City, where Lucas’ wife is a prominent businesswoman, included demolishing a convention center, but the plan ended up being challenged in federal court.
The museum was originally proposed in San Francisco’s Presidio, but a waterfront site offered by Mayor Ed Lee was rejected. That led to the billionaire Lucas exploring sites in Chicago.
The museum’s original futuristic design theme by Beijing-based MAD Architects resembled a cross between an extraterrestrial mountain and a space ship.
