Final Design for Major Mass. Pike Overhaul Unveiled
Massachusetts state transportation officials revealed the final design for a $1.1 billion overhaul of the Massachusetts Turnpike in Allston, and raising a section of Soldiers Field Road along the Charles River to create a new viaduct above the highway. Not only is it the biggest highway project in Boston in a generation, it promises to reshape the city’s western face, though will likely disrupt commutes for years.
The work involves straightening the sweeping turnpike as it curves through an area with abandoned rail yards. That opened space will be used for new streets, a train station and new development land for Harvard University. A construction timeline has yet to be set, and funding will be identified now that the final design is completed.
Transportation officials decided to flip the current alignment, with the turnpike at grade level next to the railroad tracks, and Soldiers Field Road elevated over either the eastbound or westbound highway lanes.
