Experts Seek Cause of Salesforce Transit Center Beam Cracks
It is expected to take until next month before San Francisco officials discover the cause of cracks in two steel beams in the newly-built $2.2-billion Salesforce Transit Center. A peer review panel is being assembled this week, which will look at fixes to beams as well as the design of the entire structure.
Transbay Joint Powers Authority, the public agency that built and operates the transit center, says it will remain closed until experts determine it is safe to re-open it. The public park built above the center could re-open sooner. Fremont Street will remain closed at least until Oct. 12, so crews can shore up the beams where the street runs directly beneath the cracked steel beams.
The transit center opened Aug. 12, but was shut down Sept. 25 when crews discovered a fissure in one steel beam in the ceiling supporting the rooftop park and garden. A second crack was found in an adjacent beam later the same day.
