Expansion Plans Advance for Milwaukee Convention Center

The Wisconsin Center District’s board approved a resolution to advance plans for expanding Milwaukee’s downtown convention center. The expansion, which could break ground in early 2021, would double the Wisconsin Center’s size to about 800,000 square feet.

Friday’s vote authorized a bond issuance of up to $300 million to finance the project. It also budgeted up to $1 million to hire a third-party owner’s representative.

“The unanimous vote and positive discussion surrounding the resolution made it clear that the city, county and state are all very much in support of the expansion,” said Marty Brooks, president and CEO of the Wisconsin Center District.

An RFP to hire an architect and construction manager is expected to follow in early 2020. We are very sensitive to the fact that timelines are fluid and are subject to market conditions,” said Jim Kanter, chairman of the district’s board.
