Equinix to Pay $3.6B for Verizon Data Centers
Equinix Inc., headquartered in Redwood City, CA will pay New York-based Verizon Communications Inc. $3.6 billion to acquire 24 data center sites, containing 29 data centers, throughout the United States and Latin America. The all-cash deal, anticipated to close in mid-2017, will boost Equinix’s data-center count to 175, with properties in Washington, DC, Houston, New York City and Bogota, Colombia.
The buyer indicated that the new data centers serve approximately 900 customers. The transaction is Equinix’s largest since its 2015 purchase of Telecity plc, located in the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, for Verizon, the sale provides the ability to better focus on services that are core to its business.
