The Chicago Transit Authority will make line extensions on four South and West Side bus routes permanent

Emanuel Proposes Expanding TOD Policy to Bus Lines

The Emanuel administration on Friday proposed extending the city’s transit-oriented development policy to include high-ridership, high-frequency Chicago Transit Authority bus routes. The expansion of the policy, originally introduced in 2013 to support development around train lines, reportedly would make Chicago the first city to pursue a citywide TOD policy around buses.

“Chicago has been a national leader in transit-oriented development, and expanding the policy to bus lines will strengthen smart growth in the city,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “We look forward to continuing to work closely with communities to enhance the way we live, work and get around Chicago.”

Over the next six months, the city and CTA will study potential approaches to encourage transit-oriented development along high ridership, high frequency CTA bus routes, initially focusing on the Western, Ashland, Chicago Avenue and 79th Street bus lines. The study will seek input from aldermen as well as community stakeholders.
