Emanuel Plans to Spend $1B on Schools Upgrades in FY2019

The Emanuel administration is proposing a Chicago Public Schools budget that includes nearly $1 billion in capital investments citywide. A public hearing on the fiscal 2019 budget is scheduled for Monday, July 16, to be followed three days later by hearings on the capital plan.

“For many students, this will mean new annexes, classrooms, playgrounds, and turf fields,” Janice Jackson, CEO of CPS, wrote on the CPS website about the FY2019 capital plan, the largest single-year investment in more than two decades. “For others, it will mean renovated school buildings that are safe and ready for the new school year.”

Other highlights in CPS’ FY2019 budget include the introduction of a four-year plan to ensure that all schools have state-of-the-art digital devices; access for an additional 5,000 students to IB, STEM, Classical and Magnet programs; and funding the first phase of what’s promised to be universal pre-K.
